Empowering victims through solidarity.

A detailed interview with a police officer who has personal knowledge dealing with domestic violence cases is presented in this part. The interview provides useful details about the difficulties faced by law enforcement, the resources available for aiding survivors, and the complicated processes of managing cases of domestic abuse. We study how officers handle these difficult circumstances, the protocols in place to guarantee victim safety, and the essential part that police play in the wider community of support through carefully chosen questions. This discussion aims to bring more light on the viewpoint of law enforcement, emphasising the challenges they face as well as their dedication to rescuing victims of domestic abuse.

Interview

What challenges do you face when investigating these types of situations?

"Victims don't usually tell lies, but like in any other field, there are times when people may attempt to use the law to their advantage, particularly when it comes to custody, separation, or money problems like mortgages. But in order to separate genuine instances from those where the system might be misused law enforcement must manage each case carefully and properly. Furthermore, we occasionally encounter situations in which protective measures or restraining orders are overlooked, which may further aggravate the situation and raise the level of danger for everyone involved. It is our legal duty to thoroughly examine every case to make sure that the law is being applied fairly and that real victims are protected."

What is your approach towards the case when the women don’t want to press charges against their abusers?

"When a woman chooses not to press charges against her abuser, our priority is still to ensure her immediate safety and well-being. In such cases, we take the following steps:

Medical support: We make sure that the woman receives the necessary medical support no matter their opinion on the charges that should be pressed towards her aggressor.

Visual inspection: To be able to evaluate the depth of her wounds and the damage, we perform a thorough and effective visual inspection. This helps us build a record for a case incase in the future she ever wants to report her abuser if the situation escalates. "

What is an improvement that you would like to see in the legal action or laws about domestic abuse in Spain?

"Increasing the chances of a convicted or reported aggressor receiving a court induced bracelet" These braces began to be employed in 2009. The bracelet consists in emitting a radio frequency signal when it detects any breakage, aggressiveness or the absence of the persons contact with the bracelet. It also includes a GPS tracking signal which allows the victim to also be aware if her aggressor is near.
